Our Auckland SPCA Animal Education team based at the Auckland Animal Village, provide hands-on encounters, teaching hundreds of students young and old about the importance of pet care, pet owner responsibility and animal welfare in our community.

We are currently raising money to build three new shelters for both our education farm animals and incoming rescued farm animals at the Auckland Animal Village, which include goats, sheep and our lovely education cow 'Miss Moo'.

Keep track of our fun fundraising target thermometer as to our progress towards the new farm animal shelters. If you would like to make a contribution please contact our Education Barn Supervisor, Fiona McDonald, at fiona.mcdonald@spca.org.nz or 09 256 7300 ext 824

UPDATE: Great News!! Thanks to some fantastic donations we have now reached the goal on our Thermometer chart and raised enough money for some new Cow and goat shelters. A special thank you to Western Heights School and CMC Markets NZ for their awesome contribution.

Materials needed

  • Our Volunteers are always looking for polar fleece (stretchy type or not) to make blankets for our cats and kittens to curl up on when they are in their cages. If you have any spare (a bolt or just a few metres) that you would like to donate we all would greatly appreciate it - especially our cats and kits.

  • We also need large amounts of Teslon and/or nylon parker material for our Volunteers to make carry cage covers with. If anybody can help us out we would very much appreciate it. We need lots of covers to make it less stressful for our cats and kittens when we transfer them around the village.

Animal essentials

  • Canned cat and dog food: We routinely need canned cat and dog food because if we have sufficient for the Village, we pass it to our Foster Families who are looking after our waifs.

  • Shredded paper: We can only use wide strips, not the narrow ones.

  • Newspapers, towels and blankets are routinely required for our animals. Please - no electric blankets, because we've discovered that the puppies will pull out the wiring very quickly!

Infection control

  • SanSmart Footbath Sanitisers - $488.80 (incl. GST)
High-Wall Rubber Footbath to control spread of infection. Sole, sides and welt areas of footwear get a thorough bath to eliminate bacteria.

Knitters

Glenda has a team of knitters that knit mice toys and blankets for the SPCA has asked for the following:

  • For A3 size blankets for our cats/kittens
  • Blankets can be any colour/s
  • For ‘mice’ for our kittens
  • Wool: any colours, any ply

Please contact our Feline Team Leader Jenna in the first instance: jenna.fowler@spca.org.nz

Enrichment Toys

  • Rabbits need toys too!Our rabbits like to be kept busy during their stay with us. Baby teething toys and rattles make good objects for rabbits to play with.

If you have any dishwasher safe "pre-loved" baby toys that are in good condition we would love to have them. Please contact our Feline Team Leader Jenna in the first instance: jenna.fowler@spca.org.nz

  • Assorted canine enrichment toys/items eg small plastic swimming pools, bungy cords, sand & plastic sandpits, balls (rugby, netball, soccer, basketballs), soft toys, dog toys

George's Barn and FarmYard

  • Cordless clippers to assist is shearing the sheep who are temporarily resident at the Animal Village - approx $250

  • Part of our education programme consists of interaction with various animals who live in and around George's Barn. These consist of rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, pigs and goats. These animals need fresh vegetables and fruit to stay happy and healthy.

  • Tordon 2G weedkiller for our Farm area - $100

  • 1 days hire of a bobcat, for work on the farm - $439.88

If you have anything you could contribute for our barn, please contact Fiona McDonald, our Rural Animal Technician.
