FOSTER VOLUNTEERS WITH THE AUCKLAND SPCA

Thank you for your enquiry about becoming a foster person.

A foster home is a safe friendly home environment in which animals can benefit from lots of love and personalised attention.

Auckland SPCA sends animals out to foster homes for many reasons:

  1. They might need to gain enough weight in order to desex them ready for adoption.
  2. They may be recovering from a surgical procedure.
  3. They may need monitoring for health reasons.

The length of time animals are fostered will vary, but cats and kittens will generally be between three and six weeks. Dogs may need longer but this would be discussed with you when we contacted you.

When fostering cats and kittens the provider needs to have a secure spare room to quarantine them from any other house-hold pets. When fostering dogs your property needs to have secure fencing with inside areas that a dog can sleep and interact with the family. You will also need to have your own transport to pick up the animals and bring them along for vet appointments.

Auckland SPCA will provide all the necessary food, litter, litter trays, bedding, medication training and support.

Foster animals need lots of love and attention from you, and fostering can be an extremely positive and rewarding experience in the knowledge that you are helping save lives and nurse them back to health.

We welcome new people into the fostering programme and if you are interested in joining the team, please fill out the attached foster agreement form, and return it to the Auckland SPCA.

Once we have received your application we will contact you to advise of the next training and orientation workshop. These are held monthly and you will need to attend a workshop as part of the programme before commencing fostering animals.

You can help to make a difference in the lives of some of the animals at the Auckland SPCA Village by becoming a foster person just by joining our friendly team.

Yours sincerely,

Rebecca Laird
