Canine Café Companions

Purpose:


To assist with the promotion & re-homing of SPCA dogs & fully vaccinated puppies in accordance with our re-homing procedures & policies. To take SPCA canines into public places where allowed and promote them to the public with a view to them being re-homed.

 

Reports to: Volunteer Coordinator

 

Hours: Monday to Friday between the hours of 9am and 4pm. Minimum of one hour per day and one day per week, for a minimum of 12 days.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Attend Volunteer Orientation
  • Attend and pass the “Canine Personal Trainer” Training.
  • Take fully vaccinated dogs & puppies into the community/events to create awareness & promote them for re-homing
  • Excellent public relations
  • Observe all Village Health and Safety and infection control protocols
  • Identify and report any new hazards – including animal’s behaviour
  • Report all accidents
  • Ensure Village procedures are followed with regarding to getting dogs out of modules/pens and that lock-down procedures are followed
  • Ensure that dog walking protocols are followed such as the correct use of the slip rope collars, correct words of command and hand signals, use of positive reinforcement
  • Ensure that no harsh methods are training are used
  • Ensure that the animal’s wellbeing and safety is paramount
  • Exercise and interact with animals according to prescribed methods for obedience and behavioural rehabilitation at the village
  • Take animals off the SPCA property with the permission of the Animal Attendant & a manager
  • Only take animals on breaks with the permission of the Animal Attendant and when the circumstances are safe and appropriate in accordance with prescribed guidelines
  • Monitor and report on behavioural changes and training progress
  • Maintain appropriate records for the animals as directed
  • Work cooperatively with volunteer and staff team members
  • Always pick up poop when walking/moving animals

Volunteer Job Description
Dog Adoption Assistant

 

Dog Adoption Assistant - Adobe Reader formatPurpose: To assist with the preparation of a dog/puppy going to a home, assist team with the rehoming of dogs & puppies in accordance with village protocols and as directed by the Animal Attendant and Volunteer Team leader/Coordinator.

 

Reports to: Volunteer Coordinator

 

Hours: Weekends
Shift:- 10-3 (1/2 hour lunch break) weekly/fortnightly or
  Weekdays
Shift:- 10-2 (no lunch break) 10-3 (1/2/ hour lunch break) weekly/fortnightly or

 

Duties

  • *Ensure each dog is groomed & presented well
    *WEEKDAY VOLUNTEERS

 

  • *Bath animals according to prescribed methods for grooming at the village.
    *WEEKDAY VOLUNTEERS

 

  • Promote the animals available for adoption to visitors, endeavouring to match people with appropriate animals

 

  • Assist the adoption team with potential adoption meetings

 

  • Explain Meet Your Match cards at front of modules

 

  • Maintain appropriate records for the animals as directed.  Especially regarding exercise , bathing and behavioural details
  • Work cooperatively with volunteer and staff team members
  • Hand out promotional flyers
  • * Help set up puppy socialisation programme, which involves removing faeces & cleaning between puppies
    * TIME & EXPERIENCE PERMITTING
  • Pick up poop when walking/moving animals
  • Process adoption paperwork including payments
  • Reply to some email requests
  • Returning dog/pup to module when interaction time is finished.
  • Fetching adults and pups for adoption potential rehoming.
  • *Observe Meet Your Match assessments to gain understanding of program
    * WEEKDAY
  • Cover dog adoption staff while they take lunch breaks

Other duties if required:

  • Other duties as may be reasonably required within your capabilities and training.

    Canine Personal Trainers Wanted!

    aka Dog Walkers!

     

    Fancy taking a lovable pooch for a walk? The Auckland SPCA canine residents need some volunteer personal trainers – and that could be you!

     

    You will assist the welfare of our dogs by providing them with mental and physical exercise and stimulation. It will help them to get homes and make their stay with us all the more enjoyable!

     

    So what’s in it for you? Exercise, fresh air, training and the satisfaction of knowing you have made a difference to a dog’s life.

     

    Are you reasonably strong and fit? Reliable, dedicated with an affinity for dogs? Are you keen to volunteer your time to the Auckland SPCA in Mangere?

     

    If you answered yes to the above and have at least an hour to spare each week, Monday to Friday between the hours of 9am and 4pm, then we want to here from you. A minimum commitment applies.

    Current Auckland SPCA Internship programmes

    Become part of the Auckland SPCA canine care team & gain extensive knowledge on the care of canines. This is a great opportunity to learn about canine behaviour, nutrition, disease control & enrichment in a kennel environment. You will be provided with training, an opportunity to recieve regular feedback & to recieve formal references.

     

    Canine Care Intern

     

    Duration: 2-3 days per week (weekday) for 3 months starting as soon as possible

     

    Location: Auckland SPCA, Mangere

     

    Knowledge & Experience: Confidence with dogs, studying or working toward an animal related course

     

    Skills & Attributes: Personable & enthusiastic, commitment to animal welfare, reliable, show initiative & work without close supervision

     

    Structure of the Internship:

    The intern will report to the Volunteer Manager. The Volunteer Manager will ensure the intern is part of the team and is exposed to a variety of learning opportunities. This is a volunteer role at the Auckland SPCA.
