SPCA INCENSED AT MASS SLAUGHTER OF DOGS
28 January 2010
The shocking shooting of 33 dogs at a property near Wellsford, has horrified staff at the Auckland SPCA who describe the incident as appearing to be a frightening example of animal abuse.
Executive Director Bob Kerridge said today “In my many years with the Society there have been a number of atrocities against animals but none on such a scale as this. The scene which confronted our two inspectors will leave a lasting impression on them”.
A witness, Richard Hawkings, interviewed by the SPCA, described the incident as “20 minutes of frenzied shooting. These men were on a mission”, he said. He described the scene as one of “gushing blood and screaming dogs as fear took over. Those dogs displayed real emotional feelings as their brothers and sisters were mercilessly killed around them. It’s over, but not in my mind”, he said.
The Society’s initial investigation of the scene has indicated that many of the dogs appear to have endured pain and suffering through the ordeal and accordingly has indicated that charges “will definitely be considered. Once our investigation is complete, including the necessary interviews and necropsy examination results, the nature of the charges will be determined”, said Mr Kerridge.
The SPCA recently established a pro-bono panel of prosecutors and has confirmed that one of the panel, John Haig QC, assisted by Russell McVeagh, Solicitors, will be representing the Society in this matter.
