GUILTY VERDICT FOR NEGLECT OF EVE

16 July 2008

A conclusion has been reached in a case of animal neglect that touched the heart of the Nation.

A Ridgeback Cross dog was found by an SPCA inspector on December 23rd 2007 locked under her owners’ house and left to starve for at least five weeks without food or water. Inspector Todd Neal described the scene at the time as 'a case of blatant cruelty. 'This is the thinnest dog I have seen in my nine years with the Auckland SPCA', he said.

Because of the proximity to Christmas, SPCA staff named the emaciated dog 'Eve'. In an appeal for help to which the public rallied, the Auckland SPCA undertook to ensure that justice would be done.

That promise was fulfilled today when a Glen Innes woman, Pauline Taki, entered a plea of guilty and surrendered Eve permanently into the care of the SPCA. Sentencing of the owner will occur in September.

Bob Kerridge, Chief Executive of the Auckland SPCA said today that this is a most successful conclusion to a shocking and sad case, and thanked the public for their support. 'The compassion shown by so many people to this poor animal was heart-warming and I am delighted that their faith in us has been rewarded with a successful conclusion with the perpetrator of this ghastly act being brought to justice'.

'The SPCA will be very careful in its selection of a new home for Eve to ensure that a full and happy life is ahead of her', he said.
