The Mantle
Back in 1784, English reformer Jeremy Bentham, predicting the birth of an animal protection organisation, wrote: “The time will come when humanity will extend its mantle over everything which breathes.”
In the intervening 224 years, the animal welfare movement has grown in leaps and bounds as proved in early May here in New Zealand when several SPCA events brought together an international group with a shared passion for animals. Auckland SPCA CEO Bob Kerridge was at all the events. His conclusion? “The mantle is in good hands.”

The fight to save the small group of goats from slaughter by DOC is capturing widespread attention and sympathy.
SPCA case for the chickens
There have been reports of Albany Village’s chickens being run over by traffic, tormented by children, ripped apart by dogs, fatally shot by slug guns, injured by slingshots, pierced by crossbow bolts, reeled in by poachers using baited hooks, clubbed to death with baseball bats, and impaled with flounder spears.
The SPCA wants an end to the whole situation ...
