Do you have any spare hay? Or know of a good supplier of hay?

Once again, we're running short on hay for our equine charges. If you know of a supplier who could offer us some at a good rate, please email our inspector here. Thank you to those who have already donated hay to us - we appreciate your generousity very much.

COWS LEG FELL OFF DUE TO NEGLECT – PUKEKAWA MAN GUILTY

18 April 2008: Responding to a call from a concerned member of the public, Inspector Vicki Border of Auckland SPCA visited the property at 596 Mercer Ferry Road, Pukewara with a large animal vet. What greeted them was a horrific sight of a Hereford Steer whose right leg was so badly injured that it needed to be put to sleep immediately. The vet administered a sedative and whilst waiting for the effects of this to take place the right leg literally fell off [more...]

Author and business guru says SPCA example of 'honourable business'

Author and business guru Hannah Samuel is advising people on how to tell "honourable" businesses from those that are not. Ms Samuel from Birkenhead says fewer businesses practise what they preach nowadays, so people need to look for the "signs and symptoms" of an ethical business. "Actions speak louder than words and New Zealanders have just had a massive shock education in cynicism and naivety in business," Ms Samuel says [more...]

SPCA senior inspector Gail Boyd says after 33 years in the animal welfare industry, she was shocked by the sheer coldness shown by those responsible for beating and stabbing tame ducks at Kawakawa [more...]

click for larger imageA little thanks goes a long way

Auckland SPCA General Manager, David Lloyd-Barker, left Manukau Court House today (Friday 11 April) at the end of a successful prosecution and found an anonymous note left under the windscreen wiper of his SPCA vehicle.

The note reads:: "Whoever you are prosecuting, good luck. I couldn't do your job, but am so grateful people such as yourselves defend the abused animals in our society"

Why doesn't anyone want to adopt Venus the cat?

Venus is waiting for someone to adopt herHi my name is Venus I have been Cat of the Week more than once and I am beginning to think I will never get a home. Starving horses incident

On Friday 28 March, Inspector Vicki Border organised for the rescue of two mares and two foals from an Auckland property, that were so emaciated they would have died within days. Over the last day or so we were inundated with feed and consequently no longer require additional supplies. Thank you for your kind donations and we would also like to thank our supporters during this very difficult time. See NZ Herald story here

STATEMENT FROM THE SPCA

It is understandable that members of the public are both shocked and concerned over the condition of the horses found on a property in South Auckland.   At this stage our only concern is to attend to the animals in their best interests and our inspectors, supported by other equine professionals, are attending to that and will be doing so over the next week. We will issue a further statement in due course once we have a clearer picture of the situation, including any other course of action we may be taking in this matter. In the meantime we appreciate your support.

Chief Executive

UPDATE Fri 11 Apr 08

Despite our very best efforts with regards to the horses and foals at the South Auckland property we were only able to save 7 adults and 2 foals from the original 31. This has been both an extremely distressing and uplifting time for us at Auckland SPCA. Distressing for obvious reasons as it will always be a last resort to put an animal to sleep. Uplifting for the many messages of support we have had from all over New Zealand with offers of homes, food and just thanks.

This is just one example of the extremely difficult job the Inspectorate do at Auckland. Thank you for your support.

General Manager

Olympics clean-up - Chinese style - Beijings shocking death camp for cats

Thousands of pet cats in Beijing are being abandoned by their owners and sent to die in secretive government pounds as China mounts an aggressive drive to clean up the capital in preparation for the Olympic Games. Hundreds of cats a day are being rounded and crammed into cages so small they cannot even turn around. Then they are trucked to what animal welfare groups describe as death camps on the edges of the city. The cull comes in the wake of a government campaign warning of the diseases cats carry and ordering residents to help clear the streets of them [more...]

Silent victims of a social sickness - by Bob Kerridge

"A stark reality faces this nation, one that we need to address together - we live in a violent society. It is a growing evil that is invading our communities, our homes and our loved ones. Much of it is headline material which shocks us every time an act of violence is revealed, as well it should. However, the full extent of cruelty in the community is not generally known. That was dramatically emphasised with the release of the annual "list of shame" detailing 50 of the most horrendous cases of animal abuse investigated by the SPCA in the first nine months of this year. In addition to some sickening cases of sheer neglect resulting in extreme animal suffering, the list also featured acts of violence of an alarming intensity..." [more...]

Only buy cruelty-free cosmetics

Beauty and cosmetic products often perform extensive animal testing on their products before releasing them onto the market. A lot of these products contain a cocktail of preservatives, colourings and fragrances that can cause reactions in humans despite the suffering of the animals, in an attempt to ensure that they are fit for human usage. Some manufacturers are bucking the trend thankfully, and some of the local creulty-free producers of fine products are Living Nature, Hema Products, Carol Priest, evolu, Antipodes Nature, Trilogy Products.
