Monthly
Donations to the Animals
In the darkest moments when an animal is abandoned, lost, bewildered and frightened as
they gaze in confused disbelief through the bars of their captive cage, there is one thing
that gives them hope to survive and that is, that somebody cares.
For as long as there is an SPCA and you, there will always be hope, which is why we have
established a programme of easy giving to create a partnership (of you and us) to help
the animals. Not surprisingly, that programme is called HOPE®.
What is HOPE®?
Quite simply,HOPE® is
an automatic monthly pledge programme that you establish with your bank to allow you to
give effortlessly to the welfare of all animals at a level you choose. No matter how modest
the amount, it becomes a valuable ongoing contribution to the work we do and the lives
we save.
How do I become a HOPE® supporter?
To subscribe to the HOPE® automatic
pledge programme, just complete this HOPE®
application.
How does HOPE® help
the animals?
The HOPE® programme
was established in the Auckland region where funds donated are placed in a special bank
account dedicated soley to animal related costs... the food they eat, the veterinary attention
they need, the shelter and the loving care they deserve. Funds donated outside the Auckland
area are distributed throughout New Zealand to our SPCA partners in recognition of the
valuable work conducted directly in their community.
Auckland subscribers

Have
You Made A Will?
One of the most important things you need to do in your lifetime is to prepare a Will
that ensures your wishes are carried out after your death.
Quite simply, a Will is a statement of how you want your possessions, property and fund
(your Estate) to be distributed when you die. It is a time to remember your loved
ones and to assist those charities that are close to your heart.
In preparing your Will, you should seek the assistance of a Trustee (such as the Public
Trust or NZ Guardian Trust) or your family solicitor to ensure that your wishes are clearly
and correctly recorded.
Why is a gift in your Will so important for the animals?
Animals play an important part in our lives, providing companionship and support. However,
unfortunately there are many who are neglected and abused.
The Auckland SPCA has been providing hands-on help to those animals in need since 1883
(over 120 years!), responding to their cries for help and prosecuting those who inflict
cruelty upon them.
The SPCA is one of the few charities in the country who do not receive
Government or Local Body funding, operating almost entirely through the generosity of people
who care. People like you. Income from gifts in Wills accounts for sixty percent of our
annual income, without which we could not possibly survive. Funds received from Estates
are used directly to help the animals in our care, with a small percentage being invested
to ensure the long-term security of the organisation.
How can I provide a gift for the animals?
There are a variety of options available to you in the way in which you can help the animals
through your will, including:
- Residuary - This refers to what is left over (the 'residue') in your Estate after
all expenses, debts and other specific bequests have been settled. A residue may be shared
amongst other beneficiaries by percentage.
-
Pecuniary - This refers to a specified sum of money as a particular bequest in a Will
requiring constant revision due to inflation or changing circumstances.
-
Specified Bequest - This is the term applied to a particular item such as
- the proceeds of a life assurance policy
- stocks and shares
- works of art
- vehicles
- jewellery
- homes
To ensure the wording in your Will accurately describes your intentions, the following
clause should be included:
"I give (a specified share of the residue / or the sum of / or a specified
bequest) to The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Auckland
Incorporated for its general purposes and I declare that the receipt of the
appointed officer of the Society shall be full and sufficient discharge for the said
legacy."
Who will care for my pet after I have gone?
It is a good idea to make arrangements with family or friends to care for your pet companions
after your death, but sometimes this is not a practical alternative. The Auckland SPCA
has a Pet Legacy programme in place, in which you can make a provision in your Will or
by insuring your pet with our SPCA Pet Protection Plan & Pet Legacy Programme.
In the event of your death, the SPCA will be contacted and will arrange for the collection
of your animal/s and then
- endeavour to find a suitable home for them, or
- place them in a specially selected foster home, or
- include your elderly pet in our Seniors Foster Programme
To ensure that this occurs, suitable wording should be included in your Will, such as:
"In the event that any pet animal of mine survives me and I have made no other
provision for its care, I direct my Trustees to notify The Society for the Prevention
of Cruelty to Animals Auckland Incorporated as soon as is practical after my
death and to request that they endeavour to place that animal in a suitable home, acknowledging
their absolute discretion to deal with the welfare of the animal as considered in its
best interests."
For the sake of your loved ones,
please make a Will.
For the sake of the animals,
please remember the Auckland SPCA
