Found animals

It's an anxious time for a family when a pet goes missing. However, there are several things you can do to improve the odds of helping the owners to find them again.

Ask your neighbours if they have lost an animal or know of anyone who has recently lost an animal matching the description.

If you are happy to hold onto the animal for a short while, please look at the following methods for trying to find the owner:

  • Contact Pets on the Net a web-based, free, NZ-wide lost and found pet service www.petsonthenet.co.nz
  • For lost dogs, contact your local animal control. Your local council should have the telephone number for the pound in your area. You will also find it in the telephone book, listed under your local council.
  • Contact all vets in the area where you found the animal and let them know that you have found a missing pet.
  • Print out a circular with a photo of the pet that you have found and your contact details, as well as the time and place last seen. If you want to ensure that you have found the correct owner, you can leave one important detail off the poster; e.g. the colour of the collar. Distribute it to local vets, dairies, the pound, animal shelters and the houses in your local neighbourhood. Here are some, which you can print out and use:

  • Advertise in your local paper.

If you are unable to look after the animal that you have found, please look at the following options:

  • If you have found a dog, please contact your local animal control. They are able to collect stray dogs if you are unable to take it to them.
  • If you have found any other species, please take it to your local SPCA. Often they are unable to collect healthy stray animals as they are busy collecting injured animals or investigating complaints of animal cruelty.
